Helen trained as a family doctor before undertaking specialty training in public health. Since joining LSHTM in September 2006 her main research interest has been patient safety in acute care particularly the assessment of the scale and scope of avoidable deaths. This research has led to the rolling out of a quality improvement programme based on mortality review across NHS hospitals. Over the last 3 years she has been collaborating with Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre on a study to determine the impact of hospital services designed to identify and respond to deterioration on cardiac arrest rates and survival. In 2017 she was awarded a 3 year Health Foundation Improvement Science Fellowship.
